Gold and Silver Particles on the Turin Shroud, Studied by Scanning Electron Microscopy and Elemental Analysis

چکیده

We have studied by optical microscopy and SEM-EDX some metallic particles of gold silver adhering to a sample the Turin Shroud. A total number eighteen (and sub-particles) containing these two elements were characterized in details. Three them (e49, b22 h28-0) are parts scales, six (l38-1, 2, 3, 4, 7’ 12) micro-grains powder. The three a23-1, 2 3 sub-particles spot painting. e27 particle (of electrum) is possibly part coin Byzantine money; also, m10 could be billion (a money used during Roman Antiquity).

Archaeological Ceramics Studied by Scanning Electron Microscopy

The use of scanning electron microscopy combined with energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence analysis in studies of archaeological pottery is discussed. The methods are described and results of their application to studies of Precolumbian glossy black pottery from northern Peru are reported in some detail.

Analysis of micro-particles vacuumed from the Turin Shroud

Aim of the present analysis of particles, in the range of 3-30 m, vacuumed from the Turin Shroud, is to perform a classification and possibly to refer them to the environments in which, from historical information, it results that the Shroud was exposed. Grains of pollen, linen and cotton fibers, mites, spores and fungi, mineral particles and particles possibly coming from body fluids have bee...

Elemental mapping in scanning transmission electron microscopy

We discuss atomic resolution chemical mapping in scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) based on core-loss electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) and also on energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) imaging. Chemical mapping using EELS can yield counterintuitive results which, however, can be understood using first principles calculations. Experimental chemical maps based on EDX bear out the t...

Isolation of Herpetosiphon giganteus and Ultrastructure Analysis by Electron Microscopy

Herpetosiphon giganteus is a filamentous gliding bacterium. Gliding motility is the movement of the cells over surfaces without the aid of flagella. The mechanism responsible for bacterial gliding motility has not been known and there are only a few data on Herpetosiphon giganteus. The aim of this study was to observe the ultrastructure and negative staining of isolated strains of Herpetosiphon...
